Barry J. Seidel, MD, FACS
Member of the Board; Walter Olson Committee
Barry was born in Dorchester, Wisconsin and spent his teen years in the Fox Valley. He graduated from Kimberly High School. He did his pre-med work at Marquette University, Milwaukee and graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine (now, The Medical College of Wisconsin). This was followed by a five year surgical residency program at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals where he specialized in general and peripheral vascular surgery. In the spring of 1971 he was recruited by Dr. Henry Ashe to join Lakeland Medical Associates (a group of five general practitioners in Woodruff) as the first full time surgical specialist in the Lakeland area. Early in 1972, prior to actually moving to Minocqua, he provided medical coverage at Lakeland Memorial Hospital in Dr. Ashe’s absence, and in this capacity had the opportunity to personally provide medical care to Mr. Howard Young.
Barry became a full time surgeon in Minocqua in the spring of 1972. Even before arriving he recruited several additional medical specialists to our area. He served as president of Lakeland Medical Associates and was on the building advisory committee for the new Howard Young Medical Center hospital. He served as chairman of surgery and chief of staff on multiple occasions at Lakeland Memorial Hospital and Howard Young Medical Center. He has been intensely involved in the growth of the medical staff and of our hospital over the past 45 years. Barry has also been active in state surgical organizations and has been both secretary and president of the Wisconsin Surgical Society.
He met his wife Donah, a Minocqua native (and Dr. Kate baby) after moving to Minocqua. They live in a waterfront home in Minocqua. They enjoy boating, fishing, downhill skiing, traveling, equestrian activities and scuba diving. Barry’s underwater photographs have won national awards.
Among the greatest pleasures in his professional career has been his 40 year working relationship with his friend and colleague, Dr. Pogodzinski, and more recently the opportunity to work with his surgeon daughter, Dr. Barbara Boyer at HYMC.
In addition to his part time activities in the surgery department, Barry is currently chairman of the Walter Olson Medical Education Committee and Director of Medical Education at HYMC.
